"Uniqua is imaginary"

Backyardigans focuses on five animated characters who use their imaginations to create adventures in their own backyard. However, it has come to fans' attention that there may only be four real characters, and that the star of the show - Uniqua - is a figment of the others' imagination. There are many factors that support this theory.

  • Other than Uniqua, each main character is a real animal. Pablo is a penguin, Tyrone is a moose, Tasha is a hippopotamus, and Austin is a kangaroo. It is likely that they could have imagined Uniqua, as she is the only character whose species is made up.
  • Uniqua is the only character who has appeared in every episode and been a part of every adventure. This leads to the conclusion that the only thing Uniqua ever does is play with her friends. She does not have anything else to do (chores, spending time with relatives, etcetera).
  • Whatever the characters imagine appears to be real, proving that Uniqua could very well be imaginary. However, at the end of every episode, every other imaginary object or location vanishes and becomes the characters' true backyard again. Uniqua still appears to be there because the four friends have not stopped imagining her, as she is not tied to any one adventure or imaginary place.

"Uniqua is the creator as a child"

While Uniqua's species may be nonexistent, her personality may be based on a real person: Janice Burgess, creator of Backyardigans. "Uniqua is her name, and also her species – with her purple skin, pink spots, and dainty antennae, she doesn't look like any other creature on the planet." This leads to the theory that Uniqua is Janice Burgess's manifestation of herself as a child - she is just too unique.
